Using real data gathered from a digital tag (D-tag), a device used to study whales underwater and gather sound data, we created a 5 minute animation for Te Papa Tongarewa showing what a Sperm whale actually does when he leaves the surface of the ocean. We worked closely with a team of marine biologists to make sure we were recreating an accurate depiction of not only the whales dive but the environment and other sea life that he would encounter on his way.
